Hi all,
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I will go ahead anyway! I
purchased my new very inexpensive emachines system recently from Best Buy
and it did not come with the XP Home CD, but rather was pre-installed. What
can I do in the event of a situation where it might be required? Is there a
way to burn its contents from my hard drive to a CD?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Read your literature. One of the partitions on your hard drive contains the
recovery CD image. Instructions should be included that explain how to create
the CD.

Alternatively, you can get the CD from Best Buy.

Creating a recovery CD set from the contents of your hard drive
(usually in a hidden spot on the hard drive) is specific to the
brand... there SHOULD be instructions and/or a special program
included to create the CD set (may be only one, may be more than
one CD required... again, that is a function of your brand and
what is included that is written to a CD)

You should contact...
A-the documention that came with the computer
B-the tech support where you bought the computer
C-the actual vendor of the comptuer... Emachines

Since Emachines was recently purchased by Gateway, you may
have to go to their web site for support information

I don't believe that Emachines come with a recovery partition but do come
with a set of recovery cd's that will put your machine back to where it was
when you purchased it. Their website seems to suggest that also. I have a
friend that has done just that on his emachine and it is a pretty quick
painless process except for loosing everything that you've done up until
that time. If you have a cdwriter invest in some imaging software like
Ghost 2003, it works great and you can recover all your programs and
settings as of the last backup.

Check out a few warez sites. You can download winXP pro for free if
you have a fast enough connection.

Each company has its own cute way to 'return to factory'.. the only way to
find out how to do this is to read company info.. it is that simple..

OK, I'm an idiot. I had thrown the recovery CD in a drawer and forgot!
Thanks to all who replied.
