this is music to my ears, cause I think a late 2005 Xbox 2 launch is
too soon.

Yesterday, at the Microsoft Financial Analyst Meeting 2004, Microsoft
Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said there won't be Xbox 2
in 2005. We don't know if he's referring to fiscal or calendar 2005.
"There's no new Xbox in the next year, but, man, are we hard at work
on that next Xbox," Ballmer said.
If that "next year" means calendar 2005, the next generation console
war could start in 2006 when Nintendo and Sony are also launching
their next-generation systems. If Ballmer meant by "the next year" the
next 12 months or fiscal 2005, then the Xbox 2 could still launch in
Fall 2005, just in time for the Christmas season. Considering they are
in a financial meeting, it is probable he meant fiscal 2005, which
ends in June 30, 2005.

Xbox 2 - It's Not Next Year (HOT ITEM)
Andrew 'Talon' Wilson :: 06:49 AM @ July 30th, 2004 :: XBox: General
Yesterday Microsoft held its Financial Analyst Meeting 2004 event at
its Redmond, Washington, headquarters and this morning, with that all
past, it seems there are more than a few semi-huge to huge bits of
information. While most of the meeting didn?t focus on the Xbox or
gaming, it was revealed yesterday that Microsoft?s Media Center
Extender, which hasn?t been in the news for more than a little while,
will be launched later this year. Revealed by Microsoft?s Joe
Belifiore, who works on its Media Center and related products, the
following was said on the matter.
?Yeah, other than that. So Media Center Extender will be available
this year. And there's also a flavor of that that we're doing for Xbox
so that you can buy basically an Xbox title and turn your Xbox into an
extender.?
Xbox Media Center Extender aside though, perhaps the most important
bits from the event concerned the Xbox 2. Specifically, Microsoft?s
Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ballmer, stated that the Xbox 2
(Xbox360, Xbox Next, Xenon, etc, etc), will not be released next year.
To be exact, the following was said.
?There's no new Xbox in the next year , but, man, are we hard at work
on that next Xbox; that's all we'll say. New Xbox Live creativity,
"Halo 2," and again innovation fuels growth, innovation fuels growth.
It's about as simple as that. People fuel innovation, innovation fuels
growth and customer satisfaction, driving that hard, make sure that
the wheel can come around and around and around and around and
around.?

Xbox Next Now 2006?
MS CEO Steve Ballmer offers the quote of the year.

July 30, 2004 - "There's no new Xbox in the next year, but, man, are
we hard at work on that next Xbox." These words came from Microsoft
CEO Steve Ballmer at Microsoft's Financial Analyst Meeting yesterday
in Redmond, Washington.
Microsoft's future console -- which may be called Xbox 2, Xbox Next,
Xenon, Xbox 360, The Big X, Next 'Box, X2: Electric Boogaloo, or
something completely unexpected -- has been the source of endless
speculation over the past year. Supposedly authentic internal memos
and design specs leaked on the Internet over the past few months
spurred rumors and cemented -- at least in the public mind -- that
Xbox 2 was indeed a near certainty for 2005. Now it appears those
assertions were false.
Though Ballmer said Xbox 2 would not come in "the next year" it's
unclear whether he meant the next calendar year (all of 2005) or
Microsoft's next fiscal year, which ends July 2005. Microsoft declined
to comment or offer any clarification on Ballmer's statement.
If Ballmer was referring to the fiscal year, that would mean Xbox 2
could still be on tap for holiday 2005. If not, we can all enjoy an
extra year of rumor, speculation, denial, and wishful thinking.
IGN Xbox declines to have more on this story. No, just kidding, we'll
have more once we can pry out extra info from Microsoft or related
parties.
