Notepad should be there and so should wordpad. These are
part and parcel of windows xp. As for Microsoft Works and
a spreadsheet these are not available with XP. These are
individual applications which you purchase seperately.
Windows XP is an operating system, nothing more.
If, before your rebooting problems, you had Microsoft
Works on your system then you should have the Microsoft
Works CD. If this is the case you will need to install
Works yourself.

Hope this helps

Open Office is a free office suite that can open and save files in the Word
and Excel formats. The download is large - around 60MB but it works nicely
with no nags or spyware added.

If you decide to install the suite just open the Options->Load/Save and set
the Writer program's "Standard File Format" to "Microsoft Word 97/200/XP as
here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/images/writer2.jpg and do the same
for the Calc setting it to Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP. When you run the app
it will work seamlessly with your existing Excel or Word documents.
