Hi, when I switched on this evening, I have lost my windows sounds. I can
play a cd no problem at all, I've checked my sound settings, I've run dxdiag
and it all says there is no problems found.

Any ideas? any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Susie

The most convenient method is reboot your system and press F8 key while
rebooting and select "Last Known Good Configuration" on the list.

This problem (that only affects sounds that are triggered by a sound event)
sounds like a problem I have seen in Windows 2000 (caused by a null value at
the root of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive). Even though the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article does not list Windows XP, perhaps the
resolution can solve your problem:

KB262256 - No Sound Events Are Played
