I don't think this is the right group.
However, no I don't think that it is a candidate for uninstalling any
software. What you should be looking at is whether the speakers are
connected correctly and the volume is up, whether the Windows media settings
have not been set to mute the appropriate sound channel, and that the media
control volume settings are high enough.
You will need to look at Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices (or some
such).

Sound problem: Windows sounds won't play at startup, shutdown, email, error,
etc. The onboard sound system works because I can play CD's, play .wav
files, run Win Media Player 7 media, internet radio etc. I've checked Sound
Properties for all schemes, they show up, the play arrow is black, I click
"play", but no sound comes out. It looks like it's playing, but nothing is
audible.
I'm running an AMD XP 2100 on a Soyo mobo w/ onboard sound and it's been
perfect for a year until this. All devices show "running properly" in Device
Manager. Does this sound like a candidate for Win2000 repair reinstall?
Thanks!

Chris

All that's been done. As I said, the system plays sounds/music etc. but
won't play the Windows startup, critical stop, email, etc. sounds.

Sorry I'm posting in the wrong ng, but thanks for the reply anyway.

Chris,
Usually, either the sounds are not allocated to the events or the Wave
channel volume is zero or muted.
