Not Really Me

One of my machines got slammed when the AV expired. It started always going
to some AV site every time you started IE.

Ran the deep cleaners and got all the crap out (I think).

Now IE won't connect to anything. The internet connection is running. FTP,
telnet, etc. work fine.

Finally I re-installed SP2, but that did not fix the problem.

Any suggestions?

Scott

That is what I expect also, just didn't know where to look.
I'll give it a try and report back.

Sorry, that didn't work. Still no IE connections.

Possibly secondary problem, there is no control panel on the start menu. I
tried to use the start menu, properties, advanced and it is missing from
there also.

need to rebuild your winsock. for your internet problem
http://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html or
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
about half way down on the right, tweakui.exe download run it and
"choose repair (at the bottom) rebuild icons"

might also try SDFix in safe mode (cleaner tool)

I'm sorry I'm not sure which was the final fix, I worked on the customers PC
way to long and its all a blur.

In addition to my other post, I think you have an AVsystemcare fake
antivirus infection.
the part that all the removal tools could not get were in the Java
directories.
The fix for my customer was as follows, I removed the drive put it in my PC
as a slave drive and scanned it with AVG antivirus, then put the drive back
in his PC.
nothing else would kill it.
and then the control panel was missing and the clock could not be changed
etc,

go through these cleaning steps to see or get a clear opinion on how
clean your machine is:
= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Thanks to both for the suggestions. Unfortunately I got to the point of no
return. Pulled the drive and put it in another machine to recover data,
then put it back, and did a clean re-install. Nothing like a fresh install
to cure what ails you.
