No way to set refresh rate

I have a radeon 9500pro on windowsXP and an "unknown" 17" monitor from
Fujitsu Siemens.

Well, what happens is that no matter what the driver control panel
says the monitor OSD will display 60hz refresh rate which I verified
to be true, simply putting vsync on and running a game. This is
somewhat a new problem, it didn't happen in the past with the same
config, I can't trace back to when it started since I've noticed it
recently.

Any help is appreciated.

The problem is because of that 'unkown' monitor. Try choosing a similar
monitor, or one of the Generic ones.

Sorry, I expressed myself quite bad, the monitor is listed with a word
which sounds like "default" (my os is in Italian).
Any other ideas?

Yes, I assume that would be "Default Monitor"... Look on the back of the
monitor for a model number and go browse the fujitsu website and see if
they have a monitor driver listed.

If they don't, then you can try some of the windows drivers for other
fujitsu monitors (there's several listed in 2000Pro, I assume the same
for 9x). Pick one that is close to the monitor you've got (I've got a
17" Compaq MV720, I use the windows driver for an MV700). Monitor drivers
are really kind of trivial as they all pretty much do the same thing in
the same way. I can use the driver for a 15" compaq monitor, for
instance, but I only get two refresh rates. The only big difference is
that some have plug-n-pray rom chips in them that can tell windoze what
model it is. It's just that the "default monitor" driver only has one
refresh rate, 60Hz.

If that doesn't float your boat, then find the FCCID # on the back of the
monitor and search driverguide.com for a monitor driver that lists that
FCCID. You can find an FCCID # on any modern piece of computer hardware.
