Wayne B.

I have a Gateway that has an evaluation copy of Win2k
installed. The other day when I logged on, it had a
messaage that stated I had only 1 more hr of use before
it expired. So I took it to another location to install a
regular version of 2000 on it that I NOW have. No
incidents or mishaps between both locations, but now I
can't get anything to show on the monitor after I hooked
it up at the 2nd location. Everything seems to be
functioning fine when I turn the system on, as far as the
pc recognizing the drives ex> floppy;cd-rom;HDs.

I've put another video card in it, hoping that was the
problem but that's not it. Tried several different
monitors, unattached the HD, replaced the HD, tried
several other offbeat things (hoping that I was going to
luck-up on something, but SAME results. I'm believing
that it's the motherboard (I guess) but I just can't see
how it would just go out like that.(???????)

If anybody have any thoughts on this predicament that I'm
in, I would appreciate ANY & ALL constructive feedback
that's offered. THANX N ADVANCE The
Rookie/Wayne B.

As you can apparantly see the bios messages
hit F8 and try vga mode or safe mode

if you can get to windows it may just be a matter of redusing your video
resolution

Hi Philo.
I may have been confusing when I said that my pc seems
to be recognizing the drives. I (hear) them going thru
the regular routine when I turn my system on, and I see
the indicator lights on the floppy and cd rom blinking
also. AS far as anything showing up on the monitor,
there's NOTHING at all. Totally blank. So I would not
know when I should hit f8. Wayne B.

If you cannot even see the bios message, then my advice does not apply.

I'd try a minimal hardware configuration...
in other words remove all components except the video card, cpu &
cooler....
and RAM...then see if you can at least get the machine to post.

If not...then you will need to do such things as substitute power supply,
RAM
etc.

then add components one at a time until you get to the one that has failed

You had Evaluation copy of Windows 2000 on your PC.
that copy was expired.
you installed full (or upgrade) licensed Windows 2000 on you target PC insead of evaluation copy.
then you have no windows display now.
(you can see Boot screen but you cannot see windows splash screen and others)
Am I understand right?

here is Windows 2000 Evaluation Copy Expiration Behavior Info. from microsoft

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;250920

how did you install your lisences windows 2000?
do you have Winodws 2000 CD with you?
can you boot from your windows 2000 cd?

Hi JR, my problem is that once I transported the PC to
the 2nd location and hooked up everything there (to
install win2k) I saw nothing on the screen. It worked
FINE at the 1st location, ONCE I got it to the 2nd
location > I got no display at all. So therefore, I never
got a chance to install proper version of Win2k.

Although the expiration of an evaluation copy should not do anything
to prevent the machine from posting...
I just thought of one more thing the OP could try:

reset the bios... there is typically a jumper for restoring the factory
defaults

I'll try it and see what happens. THANX. PS - I have
another post in XP Performance and Maintenance, Jan 1,
220pm of an unrelated situation. If you feel like it,
take a look. Thanks AGAIN. Wayne B.

Hey Philo, your advice worked. Thanks a MIL. I'm back in
business. THANX AGAIN. Wayne B.

Great!
I find it best to always try all the hard things first...
before doing the easy one <G>
