O.K. people. I did two, that is TWO different virus
scans (both updated with latest DAT files, one on-line,
one with my program), and also did the Symantec Trojan
Host finder. All reported I did not have any viruses. I
still do not have search engine capabilities. I am getting
VERY frustrated. I have removed and reloaded Windows (98),
my DSL, IE, and updated EVRYTHING! I clean out my computer
on a daily basis, as well as run Lavasoft's Ad-Ware on a
daily basis to remove any spyware.
Can someone please explain what to do next? What is
there left to do after all of that?

teach486,
You can detect "Qhosts" via a new beta version of HijackThis

Search for "hosts" files. Open them with notepad. When you find the one
that has a list of search engines, delete it. Restart your computer.
