After re-installing windows xp, the display adapter is
shown as vga save. There is no facility to update driver,
my display adapter is not listed in device manager, is
not recognised by the add new hardware wizard and windows
won't allow installation off CD-ROM or internet.

Any ideas????

Go to the web site of the video card manufacturer and download the latest
drivers, Install them.
If the motherboard has built in video the drivers will be on the motherboard
manufacturer's web site

I have tried installing drivers from CD-Rom and from
NVIDIA web site, but upon re-booting this has no effect
and driver is still "vga save".

I am having the exact same problem. Looks like a
reformat is the only thing there is left to do...I have
upgraded BIOS, upgraded video drivers, upgraded mobo
drivers.

i'm having almost the same problem, when going on windows
safe mode in my computer i can see that the VGA SAFE
driver has some kind of conflict with agp controller or
pci-to-pci bridge, it's like the windows driver vgasafe
and the video card driver doesn't work together. I tried
to disable the AGP440 but it doesn't resolve it

Yea fellas, i am having the same problem. I think it has to do with formatting your ntfs partition. I have an nvidia geforce 2 gts, was workin fine. I formatted my hard drive, re installed xp, adn upon reinstallation,it could not recognize my card. I would install the latest drivers from the nvidia website, and still nothing would happen. I think formatting and ntfs partition screws something up. When i was reinstalling xp, 3 direct x dll files could not copy, as well as driver.cab file, and amd6.sys file. It may have something to do with that. I recently gave my computer to a friend who is even more computer savvy than i am. If he fixes it, i will reply to this post again, and im sure whatever works for me will help you guys out. GOOD LUCK.
