Hi,
I'm experiencing a problem with a recently built computer. Each time
the computer is shutdown via Windows, but not powered off at the mains
supply, when restarted there is no signal sent to the monitor. However
when powered down at the mains supply, and then started it works fine.

Any light shed on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Adam

Garbage psu; probably can't produce half its output. Replace with a
good one and test.

It could be, that the motherboard is drawing too much +5VSB
when the motherboard is sleeping or shut down. Try disabling
any "Wake" functions, try one stick of RAM, unplug any USB
devices plugged into USB ports where the USBPWxx header is
set to +5VSB. Visually examine the green motherboard LED
while you are working on the computer. The LED should be a
solid green, and should not blink. Before you push the
power button on the front of the case, it should be a bright
green, and that should not change in any way when you push
the power button. That LED is powered directly by +5VSB, and
if you don't own a voltmeter, the intensity of the LED might
give you a hint about how healthy the +5VSB is. Any blinking
or flashing means either measuring the current flow on the
+5VSB wire, or if you hate doing measurements, just swap the
power supply.

The second possibility, is the old "monitor leakage theory".
Use shutdown from Windows. Unplug the VGA cable from the
back of the computer. Push the power button on the front
of the computer case, and try and start the computer. There
have been motherboards in the past, where _something_ travelling
down the monitor cable, seems to interfere with the motherboard
starting. Plug in the monitor cable after it starts, and
see if any signal is present. I am not aware of a solution
for this, if the computer starts with the monitor disconnected.
On motherboards where this is a problem, you'll meet many
other people with the same problem.

In terms of getting maximum feedback about a motherboard and
its faults, I recommend reading the customer reviews on
Newegg for your Asus motherboard, or go to the Asus owned
forums. For Asrock, there are only customer reviews.

vdu, now thats an old terminology

Could it be the fact that the only power going TO the motherboard is
the 24 PIN ATX, should I also plug in the 4 Pin 12V ATX as well? I was
unsure about plugging this in incase it damaged any components.

Thanks
Adam
