I run WinXP Home and after downloading a few programs of the internet i try
to install them onto my computer but a message pops up saying ... this is not
a valid win32 application. The same applies even when trying to download
media player 11 from the official website. Any idea how can I fix this?

I think there is something corrupting your download, making the installer
corrupt!.
Try to scan your system first for malware and Viruses then run disk Clean Up
and Defrag in safe mode.

=Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.
How to manage Add-Ons:

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.

Run a scan from here on-line:

Download Avast Cleaner from here:

Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:

=How to perform a clean boot procedure to prevent background programs from
interfering with a game or a program that you currently use
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

If the cleaning and the scanning didn't help then try this:
Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need your XP CD installation media for
this procedure.
BTW do you run any Web Graphics accelerator from your ISP or any software
that speed your web pages download, that can corrupt the download.
HTH.

I think it must be the softwares you download are not complete.
Try download again,or your can use download tools such as flashget.
