When I boot windows XP Professional no user name appears, so I cannot click
on anything to log on.
The message "To begin, click your user name" is there but the right hand
side of the screen is blank.
How can I fix this?

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice and you'll get the old style logon. Enter your
username and password.

Thank you, Doug.
Is it possible that I don't have a password?
I get the logon as you suggested and my user name appears, but I have no
password to enter, and if I leave it blank, I get a message saying the system
could not log me on.

If its not allowing you to log on, you have a password somewhere. If you
somehow managed to get one set, or your account is disabled.......

What username are you using? If its just a regular user, try entering
Administrator and leaving the password blank. For XP Home, you'll have to
boot the PC into Safe Mode to access the built-in Administrator account. If
you can get in via the Administrator account, you can reset the password on
the other account, and/or check to see if its disabled.

If that doesn't help you resolve your issue, you can also reset the user
password using various online tools.

EBCD is a collection of utilities that, among other things, will allow you
to reset the Administrator, or any other user's password.

There is a also a stand alone version of the password changing tool
