no user icons at logon screen

I have a compaq notebook that has sp2 installed. It has been working fine for
2 months but now when I turn it on, it gets to the logon screen but there are
no user icons to click nor does ctrl,alt,del help as there was no password
setup. I have tried safe mode, last known and a repair of xp using the compaq
xp cd. All have failed and I still have this blank screen.

this looks like a faulty windows installation. Re-install windows and
be aware during the setup process if there are errors during the
installation because that might be cause by a Faulty instalation CD.

Boot into Safe Mode to the Admin account and log in. From there, perform a
System Restore.
