No USB ?

Hey all , reformated the other day & all went fine except that my USB
ports will no longer detect my camera / mobile phone , worked fine b4
but now just nothing happens when I attach either to either port , Iv'e
tried removing the usb's through device manager etc & when I reboot it
says that windows is installing usb's & then " your new hardware is
installed & ready to use " but still nothing is recognised .
I have an ASUS A7N8X-X board & running WinXP Pro without service packs
, all worked fine b4 reinstall , can anyone pls advise me ? , thanks .

You'll want to install at least XP SP1 for the USB 2.0 to work properly.

Thanks for the fast reply , I thought that might be the case as I did
have SP2 on b4 , but my camera etc works fine on my kids pc with no SP
at all , granted it IS a different mother board & it also worked on my
fathers pc running Win ME , again , not an asus mobo , is this a normal
thing with asus boards ?

I should think it would work without the service pack on there (though
at only USB 1.1 speeds if the device supports USB 2.0), though maybe
it's getting confused by the USB 2.0 support somehow. Does that other
board support USB 2.0?

Anyways, installing service packs will quite likely help.

I think that if you installed the A78NX MB drivers (which support USB
2.0) without the WinXP OS drivers (updated at SP-1) which they
require/assume, USB doesn't work at all. You need to install at least
SP-1 and then reinstall the existing USB drivers from Control Panel. I
don't really know why you would not want to be running WinXP SP-2,
anyway, and I certainly can't imageing why you would not want to be
running at least SP-1. Your kid's PC probably doesn't require MB USB
drivers or is old enough so that they are only USB 1.1 and compatible
with the initial release of XP.
