no tone control

i am using windows media player ver. 9. i have soundmax onboard sound. i
have no control over the tone of audio playback. the icons are there but the
are not "lit up" they will not enage. the soundmax software seems just
to send you back to the windows "window" that will not engage, so i doubt
that i have the option via my soundmax software. what up?
 
i think the answer may be in the asus utility programming i often ignore or
overlook. i will double check the install disk.
