when i hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, the windows security box comes
up, but I am unable to select task manager.

i have not loaded any new software recently and I think
something is running to degrade my system performance.

i am running windows 2000 pro on a P3.

any help would be hugely appreciated.

the button is there, but the text is faded to grey. when
i click it, nothing happens.

when i hit CTRL-ALT-ESC it cycles through the open
programs.

in response to the other message, i am the administrator
on this machine and the password is OK.

additionally, when i try to run regedt.32.exe, i am
notified that registry editing has been disabled by my
administrator.

i downloaded a program called taskinfo2003 after this
happened and with that i can have a look at what's
running, but i don't believe that to be a long term
solution!

i run norton AV2003 and did a full system scan - no
viruses.

help?

What do you mean you are "unable to select task manager"?? Is the
button not there? Is it there, but nothing happens when you click it??
Do you get an error message when you click it??

The more direct way to bring up the Task Manager is by hitting
Ctrl+Chift+Esc (instead of Ctrl+Alt+Del and then clicking

Sounds like trojan behaviour to me. You may want to look your system
over a little closer. An online scan perhaps.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc! Not Ctrl+Alt+Esc.

Ricardo,

OK, we are on a NT4 domain, but my laptop does not log on
through NT - ie, there is no logon script when i boot up.
when i log in, a number of drives are located and mapped
on th server, but there is no admin for my laptop.
additionally, my laptop is set up with only one user - the
administrator.

So you're saying that you have a domain at work, but that the machine is
not a domain member itself?

Regardless, a policy can be applied by someone else. They just need to
have a password for an account w/ local admin rights. Could have been
done when the machine was built.

You can "remove" the policy by deleting the profile. But you can not
delete your own profile. If you only have one user defined on that
laptop, create another one w/ local admin rights, login as that person
(verify that Task Manager is available for that user before proceeding),
backup your profile, then delete it.

When you log back in as yourself, your profile will be recreated and
there should be no profile in place (unless of course, the admin who
built the machine exported the profile to the default profile, in which
case all new users will get the restriction)
