My computer starting acting up today. I have several
things that are not working right:

1 boots very slowly

2 Task bar will not come up, can not get to start button.

3 Can not drag anything with my mouse - on the desktop or
in a program like explorer.

4 will not load a program from CD. Gets error that "the
windows installer service could not be accessed. This can
occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the
windows installer is not correctly installed." I am not in
safe mode.

5 when I tryed to load Norton Internet Security it said
that "the MS windows installer may be corrupted or your
system may be infected with a virus." Also when I tried to
Load a downloaded tral version of norton anti-virus
software it also could not load.

I found the MS knowledge base article telling how to fix
the installer problem but I have to go to RUN to modify
the registry, --- But I can not get the task bar up --!!?
Is ther another way to access the registry?

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks David Harmon

Using Ctrl+Alt+Del should bring up Task Manager. Via TM, you can launch
anything you need to. Click File, then New Process.

But aside from that.... Have you tried launching in Safe Mode? (Hold F8 down
while launching Windows). See if it loads properly.... and if so...
consider doing a System Restore from a date prior to having these
problems....

Thanks for the info about using the TM but I had been able
to do the same thing with the command prompt.

Yes I tried safe mode. Same thing. Any other ideas?

Thanks Daivd

How did you get to a command prompt without having access to the Start
button or the Taskbar, prior to launching CMD via Task Manager? Did you
previously set up a shortcut to one?

Did you launch 'Regedit' from Task Manager? To do the edits to the registry
that you referred to?

Since you didn't mention you'd tried it, does this mean that you cannot do a
system restore?

Have you considered doing a Repair installation of XP? (Not a re-install, a
Repair install...)
