Computer Club member's computer. There is no task bar available. How to get
access?

Charles

What happens if you click or double click in the area where you think it
should be?

Hope this helps.

Perhaps the taskbar has simply been shrunk down. Position the cursor at the
very bottom of the screen. If you see it turn into a double headed arrow
then hold down the left mouse button and drag upward.

Sometimes the taskbar registry entry becomes corrupt take this link
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm There is a link to a small
..vbs script file that can repair a corrupt registry entry that sometimes
causes the task bar to go missing.

Folks,
Since posting last evening, I have:
I noticed that the computer was at Windows XP SP1.
The task bar is functional in Safe mode.
Installed and ran AVG Anti-Spyware, removed 164 threats.
Rebooted to normal mode, installed AVG Anti-Virus-- found nothing.
Installed Service Pack 2.
Windows Firewall is operational.
Uninstalled Trend-Micro 2005

The entire desktop remains inoperative. For example, to open anything, one
must right-click and then click open. This is true even when I am able to
get to the control panel.

Folks,
I don't believer that there is any malware on the system.

The problem is bigger that previously posted.

There is also no internet connection on my LAN.

When I enter Safe mode with Command Prompt (As Administrator) and enter
ipconfig /all
I get the message:
Windows IP Configuration
An Internal Error has occured: The request is not supported.
Contact MS...
Additional Information: Unable to query host name.

Charles

Go to T and scroll down to Taskbar and select the link Taskbar is missing.
Install the fix.

Have you tried disconnecting the power supply to the modem / router.
Waiting 2 minutes and then reconnecting the power supply. Otherwise
check all physical cable connections.

What type of modem / router is involved. Is it wireless, ethernet or
USB?

Gerry,

I have two computers that run through Linksys ethernet router, and WebStar
cable modem. The ISP is Cox Communications. One is Windows Vista Ultimate,
which I am using now, the other is my wife's Windows XP fully updated. Both
work fine.

I have a switch for the flat panel monitor for the functional Windows XP,
mouse, keyboard for easy introduction of disfunctional computers. It
requires manual removal and insertion of the ethernet cable from one to the
other.

In between sessions of trying to get the disfunctional computer working, my
wife is able to work on her Windows XP system.

Can you get a clue by right clicking on your network connection, click
status, then support tab?

Thanks for your response,

The difference between the two is that the working one the Address Type is
"Assigned by DHCP," the disfunctional's Address Type is "Manually
Configured"

How does one change the address type?
