No System Sounds - other sound works

I noticed suddenly that the system sounds no longer play, eg. New Mail Notification just does a beep in the interna speaker. But when I go into Sounds and Audio Devices, all play nicelly when I preview (prehear?) them. Also all other sounds, including IE:s "sound on link click"

Now I heard somewhere that in the registry there can be a key that has been inserted in the wrong place, and by deleting it these event sounds can be restored

Anybody has a hunch?

i have the same problem. been searching these sites looking for a solution too. ARGHH! so frustrating, glad its not just me though. HELP someone x
