no system sounds or music

Running a Presario 2002, win XP, just completed destructive recovery with
factory disks. On restart, got new hardware wizard wanting to install
Multimedia Sound Manager, the couldn't find to install automatically.
Do I need a sound card or driver? Where can I download this? HP site?
The Multimedia manager has a large question mark type logo ?
