The speaker is not polarized. Reversing the two connections should
not change anything.

In the BIOS, there generally is not a control or option for the beep.
The beep should always be there.

On a successful POST, there should be one beep. The purpose of the
single beep, is to tell you the speaker is working. Error patterns
will be a repetitive beep pattern.

It is possible for a speaker wire to get pinched against sharp metal
on the computer case. If the speaker wire has live +5V on it, the
pinched wire can get so hot, that the insulation gets charred.

If you have a multimeter with an ohms scale, you could check
that the speaker presents some loading, like 16 ohms or 32 ohms
or whatever. That would be measured between the two pins with the
wires in them.

Check that the pin spacing on the speaker connector, matches the spacing
on the PANEL header. If you are recycling a motherboard from a
Dell/HP/Gateway etc., it is possible the header design is not the
same as your case wiring.

Does this motherboard give a beep? The ASUS P4PE in my older
system gives no beep. Instead it gives a voice message through
the audio out to indicate a successful boot-up.

I got the Asus P4P800, Wish I had bought the P4P800E. Never listen to
it. Wow, I should listen the next time. After 3 years, you kinda
fail to think about those things.

westieben...
It may, or may not be a misconnection or any problem with your audio
connections or speakers as responders to your query have indicated.

Be aware that quite a few motherboards have been released during the past
few years that simply don't beep during the bootup process. It's not an
unusual turn of events at all. Assuming you're not experiencing any other
problems with your system I wouldn't be concerned about this.

Sure. Ask a computer tech or store. Your problem has NOTHING to do
with XP and as such is out of place HERE.

Ask elsewhere.

Farad'n is our resident 13 year old mentally ill ****wit. You can safely
ignore him - everyone else does.

He has a single obsession with people posting perfectly welcome questions
about hardware to a hardware newsgroup. He has contributed nothing himself.
