I have WMM5.1
When clicking on "CAPTURE from video device" button, the capture wizard
appers along with an error messge that reads: "No such interface supported".
When I click on the the "OK" button, the wizard closes and I cannot continue
to capture any video...please help

Hello,

Your software is telling you that the interface is either not recognised or is
corrupt. The interface is a set of procedural calls to the underlying software
that is XP. Those calls can ONLY be made by a Digital Device (in the case of
Movie Maker) If you are trying to use a USB device via Movie Maker you are more
than likely going to receive all manner of error messages (although at least
one person recently insists they have captured DV video using a USB device)

If you are NOT using a DV camera then I suggest you uninstall whatever software
came with your capture device and reboot twice...then visit the directory where
that software was installed and delete it and all of the contents...follow that
by re-installing your software.

If you ARE using a DV camera then you should power down the machine, remove the
Firewire card and reboot a couple of times....then re-install the card watching
carefully for screen prompts.......If it fails!!!! then do the
following...Right click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager. look for the
Firewire Card and click on Properties and read the status of the card....if it
says that there is a fault then it may be you have a duff card OR its not
properly seated in its PCI slot....in addition, I have heard that Texas
Instruments chipset on their firewire cards do not always work well with Movie
Maker. I can't say whether that's a just remark or not...but its worth trying a
different card if your is a TI

Whilst looking at the Device Manager you should look for Exclamation marks or
red icons next to any device. If you find any you should ask yourself.....Have
I intentionally disabled that device or, where is my service contract :)

If all else fails take it to Niagara Falls and up to the top of the circular
observation tower and see if you can throw it into the middle of the Canadian
side of the falls :)))))...OR see if you can hit the Maid of the Mist :) (If
you decide to do that let us know and I will get the local webcam to watch out
for you)

Seriously, Some cameras now store the video in MPeg or Quick time
format......if this is the case with yours then Movie Maker is not going to be
the software of choice for capturing, and if you want to edit with Movie Maker
you are going to need some software to convert it to AVI (for best results) or
WMV. If the format is MPeg, MPE, MPG or VOB and if you own the latest version
of Nero (Ver 6 Reloaded) you can with great ease convert it to AVI and edit it
in Movie Maker (I have just done the film "The Fast & The Furious" using that
method...the quality is Very Good too)

Hope these ramblings help a little and let us all know if you are going to
Niagara :)

Hi John,

Not sure if you meant me, but I know I've said a few times
I was able to capture video with MM2 using USB (Sony
TRV460). I think I even tested the capture of live video
directly from the camera as this one can be used as a web
cam as well. BUT . . . I did not ever try to save it as DV-
AVI. When I first started I wasn't aware of the "other
choices" link until I started reading this board. I was
also introduced to the wonderful world of firewire here as
well. So yes you can capture video, in DV-AVI format - I'm
not sure. Maybe one day when I get really bored, I'll try
it.

Steve

P.S. For as patient as you always are, I'm glad to see
you've settled down from the one poster (not quite
following directions) that got your BP up the other day.

Hello,

You might be the user, I don't know. Whether you are or not, I believed that
the remark involved DV video...so maybe I have that part wrong.

Are you Steve as in Weave :) If so did you get my email??? not received a
reply you see !!!

I appreciate your reply, but in my case I was looking for a quick and dirty
live capture application. Movie Maker has an easy to use codecs list coded
for "PPC Handhelds" to "Burn a DVD" disk - to make the selection as fool
proof as possible. I have an ATI 9800 All-In-One card, a firewire port (but
my DV camera was not hooked up to my TV) and a USB web cam. I cant even get
into the wizard part of MS MM before the thing explodes with the error
message I sent previously. Im not sure what to do to get it to work again...
what I ended doing was using the ATI TV software to capture the 1 hour movie
(300MB) and then use the MS MM software to convert the avi file down to a
60MB file wmv file suitable for his handheld...but it would be really great
if I can get MS MM to work so I can have it done in one step.

I really believe it has something to do with the registry and settings as I
had the window working until I changed the settings (dont ask me which one as
I was touching a few) within the wizrd and then the thing crashed. Now, I
cant even get the darn window to show so thats why it must be a setting I
changed and when the window tries to come up, its using the last setting I
selected as the default- which is causing it to bomb out- any thoughts would
be great-
