No streaming video after fresh install of Vista

Had WinXP Pro with IE 7 and Media Player 11 with no problems playing online
content. Bought Windows Vista Home Premium. Did a completely clean install
on a Athlon 3800 X2 PC I built (Same one that had XP before). I can no
longer play audio or video files on websites that are directly linked.
Microsoft has a web page with test files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992/en-us and I can't get any of them to
work. After disabling the firewall and IE Internet Security, I am still
unable to launch by clicking on the link. When clicking on the link nothing
happens although I can right click, choose "Save target as...", download it,
then play it. MS does give a link to continue with troubleshooting if you
can't play these files...couldn't find help there either.
 
You need to install Adobe Flash Player..

Adobe Flash Player is one of the first programs I installed after Antivirus
and Windows update. If you look at the link I provided you'll see there are
many formats including MID and MPG which does not need a flash player to
play. I have seen the same question many times searching the web and no one
seems to have an answer.
 
For anyone else having this issue in Windows Vista:

Go to the Control Panel, click on "Classic View" in the left hand menu,
double click the "Default Programs" icon.
Now click on the "Set Default Programs" link, highlight Windows Media Player
in the left hand menu, choose "Set this program as default". Click "OK"

With the Default Programs Menu still open: Choose "Set program access and
computer defaults"
Click the double arrows for Custom. Make sure all the selections have a
check in the box beside "Enable access to this program" Make the correct
selections for your browser and the default media player as Windows Media
Player. Ok out of everything.

For some reason after installing some codecs (even without other players)
the file association changes. Hope this works for all.
 
I found that the same problem, I had to run IE 7 as the administrator to be
able to view streaming video.
