Hi,
My problem is this:
Whenever I turn on my computer, it runs through the memory test and
hard drive recognition, etc... I get to the Windows XP logon screen
and when I log it, it sits there for a long time saying, "Loading your
personal settings". When it finally finishes, it loads my desktop but
no start menu, icons, or system tray.

This problem was all of the sudden. I had not made any changes to my
computer and I just resarted it one day and this happened.

I was able to press Ctrl.Alt.Delete and saw no applications running. I
tried to start explorer.exe, systray.exe, and regedit.exe by clicking
New Task button. However, explorer and systray both do nothing (I was
able to get into the registry but did not no what to change).

I tried to restart in safe mode and got the exact same problem, no
start menu or icons. Same thing with the task manager also. I'm not
sure if this is a virus problem but I doubt it since I was not
connected to the internet about a week before this problem occured.

I am running a P4 2.66 gHz, Win XP Pro, 1 GB RAM, and a 250 GB HD. I
don't think this will be that useful but maybe it is.

Thanks for any help you can give me regarding this,

Matt

Take a look at the screen and video settings. Right click
on the desktop and select the Properties option then go to
the Settings tab. It is possible that you have the wrong
screen or video card selected and those things are there
but just off what is visible. I have seen this when a different
screen is plugged in. Changing the resolution and reinstalling
the drivers has helped it.

The other option is that the physical settings on the monitor
have been altered and the image is too big for the screen area.
Somewhere on the actual screen there will be a way of setting
the horizontal and vertical size and other things like size, colour
etc. See if shrinking the image and moving it up will help.

Steve.
