Gregg Mazel

Please delete all email from gmazel. I am getting spammed from this list.
Thank you,
Gregg

Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. Even if supernews (your
news server) were willing to send out a cancellation notice, none of
the thousands of news servers throughout the world are obligated to
honor it (and, since notices like that are easy to spoof, most
don't).

If you use a spam-trap (like you just did) you can expect the swen
("news", backward) worm's worst to be over within a week or three.

OTOH, if you look through the archves at

http://google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*excel*

for "swen" and "spam" you'll find hints about how to filter the swen
junk out.

OK, I will try your advice.
Thanks,
Gregg

It isn't as easy :-(
Massive problems with spam to addresses gathered from NG's arrived this
year. Those couple of spam letters in week, I get a year or 2 ago weren't
problems at all - I have switched off preview for Outlook ages ago, and I
never read letters when I'm not sure about theyr origin, so they ceased
soon. So I was careless and used my real mail address as return address for
OE.

But somewhere at spring the number of such spam leaped to several hundred
per day. So some months ago I changed my mail address, created a 'dummy'
mailbox meant for use in NG's on free mail-server (with filter, sending all
incoming mail to recycle), and my old mailbox in our mail server was
deleted. But some of spam, and mail infected with Swen worm, continue
arrive. As such address doesn't exist on server anymore, along with message
about virus, a message of absence of such address is sent to sender
automatically. Which of course is reason, a message that such addressat
doesn't exist, or that the mailbox is full, is returned. The server gets
50-100 such original mails per day, with corresponding automating postings
added, this number isn't decreasing anymore, and our network admin is somhow
discontent.

At least one of the threads that I looked at via your link advocated
changing your username. In the microsoft.public.security.virus NG they
suggest that you do not 'munge' your username because although it will stop
the spam coming to you, your ISP will still receive the spam but be unable
to deliver it and, given extreme circumstances, may go down under the weight
of it all.

Equally well they warn against changing your address after the @ because you
may inadvertently create someone's real domain name and thus have them
targeted with loads of spam unfairly.

I use the domain name mailinator.com which does not require any subscribing,
it simply creates an account for you when a mail arrives and deletes it
'after a few hours' - no trouble and they seem to invite spam - have a look
at the site.

I always thought that it was just a matter of time before spammers removed
the 'nospam' to retrieve real addresses. Of course it will probably also be
a matter of time before they start targeting the 'replace' and 'with'

Regards

Sandy
