I am just about at the end of my wits with this computer. One thing after another. I recently installled a new hard drive since the old one siezed up, I have had to reload everything. It's almost workinging perfectly, but no sounds at all. I have checked everything suggested in the troubleshooting section - that's why I'm here. Here's a clue, I did have modem noises and machine beeps previous to downloading critical updates and driver updates from microsoft. Now nothing! Any suggestions ???

If you did the step by step for help on sounds in the help/support and all
checked out ok.
I did happen to read this from a past post...worth a try!

(After a week of struggling with this (knowing there was no problem with my
sound card or drivers) I finally figured out with a hint from another user
that it was indeed my Windows Profile was corrupt in some way. I created a
new profile and all of my sounds work fine when I log in with that profile.
So I had to transfer my desktop Icons and favorites over to that new profile
and re-configure most of my microsoft programs and then everything is fine.
Thinking my profile was corrupt was about the last thing that I would have
thought of.)

One thing about sound problems..it can be cause by almost anything.

Last year I was in same boat..did the step by step (no sound) from
help/support... did it all...
updated new drivers..results no help...So I decided to give it another try
with the step by step help..when it came to insert the CD disk with drivers,
I inserted it again..well it worked..why it did not first time I never know.
That's my problem not sure what is wrong with yours.
Sorry I can't help you better..Good luck you will get it fixed..keep asking
and reading up on it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried logging on as the "guest user" but it
didn't help. Is this going to have the same effect as creating a new
profile? Is it possible that this is a residual problem or damage caused by
blaster worm? (I did deal with that problem - it caused frequent system
crashes. I am just a low-level user trying to get the product to perform as
advertised. In the course of this last few weeks I am getting more computer
knowledge, but it's still Greek to me.

Try removing the sound card, then boot up the computer so that windows recognizes a hardware change. Shutdown your computer, reinstall the sound card, then power on your computer. Windows should recognize the sound card as new hardware. You may also want to try a different PCI slot. I've heard of problems being cleared up just by using a different PCI slot.
