First check that your sound card drivers are installed. Then see some
possible sound tests:

Windows XP Audio tests

1. All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder, click the
red button, speak into the microphone, the sound indicator should activate
and record. Play and hear the recording and if ok, erase it with Edit >
Delete Before Current Position > click OK to the Sound Recorder popup. Close
the Sound Recorder if you only have installed on your PC the microphone
tested. If there is a second microphone installed, click Edit > Audio
Properties > Audio Devices tab > under Sound Recording Default Device, select
the other microphone > click Apply and Ok; do the same Sound Recorder test as
before. Remember some users have a microphone in the webcam and another in
the headset.

2. For the microphone connected directly to the Sound card, and presuming
that the sound drivers are installed, the settings are: Control Panel > Sound
and Audio Devices > Audio tab, and under Sound Recording, the Default device
should show the Sound Card installed. Click Volume and the Microphone should
have a check in Select. Click Options > Properties, and Recording is only
check and the Microphone among other services you have or like. For the
Logitech Microphone (PTZ) integrated in the webcam, click Volume and the
Capture popup will only show the volume slide and the Mute all uncheck.
Options > Properties will only have Recording and Capture with a check.
