can anyone help me. i cant hear any sound from my computer. i have recently
installed windows xp. i have tried almost every troubleshooter. what is a
sound device? how do i get one? how do i determine if my computer has already
got one and the problem isnt something else?

A sound device is normally and soundcard, either on the motherboard or in a
separate PCI slot. It is on the back of your PC where you plug in your
speakers.
If you have a speaker jack on the back, then you have a sound
device/soundcard.
When you recently installed XP, did you upgrade from an older Windows version,
or was it a clean install (no previous OS)? If you upgrade from 98 or 2000
to XP, you must also upgrade your drivers for the soundcard. Check your
papers
of your PC or check the Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager, so
you can go to the website of the soundcard manufacturer and download the
latest, XP compatible, drivers. They are free. You do have speakers, don't
you?
