No sound

I tried to play music through Windows Media Player and did not hear anything.
I tried headphones and external speakers and still nothing. I tried some
basic troubleshooting stuff Microsoft suggested but I don't know what else to
do.

Which version of WMP?
Have you pressed the mute button next to the WMP volume control?
 
WMP/Tools/Options/Devices/Speakers/SpeakerProperties/Advanced... check if
all options are correct - ex., the Speakers are detected, are the correct
setup (stereo, 2.1 etc), analog (uncheck didgital) etc. Lower some of the
acceleration/quality settings.
Let us know where you stumble in these steps.
