No Sound

Does your sound card show up in Device Manager? If not then it doesn't
recognize it and you'll need to load the drivers. If it does, check to see
if it reports any errors with the device.

Oddly enough (lol lol) it would seem that one of the updates has turned off the sound in service on some machines. But this is MS so go figure. go>start\control panel\administrative tools\services and scroll down until you see "windows audio" then double click to open the options windows and then on the "startup type" line right click the drop down list arrow on the right and then choose automatic and then click apply down the lower right then click the start button and then close out of here. This may or may not do it. I have been seeing a lot of machines with the audio turned off in services after an update and I'll be damned if I know why. If that doesn't work e:mail me and I'll give you the other 4 ways of where to check your sound setup and what is missing. good luck.

I have read your advice to Galen about checking Admin Tools for 'Automatic ' Setting for Sound. Mine is set to Automatic, however, there are no sounds.

I have recently installed Windows XP on a brand new machine, although I am using my old speakers. Troubleshooter does not seem to identify the problem and I have checked the obvious causes. When speakers are powered up, they are obviously ready for use, but the computer remains silent, including CD player, system sounds etc

If you are able to post the 4 other checks you referred to before, I would be very interested and grateful.

Thanks for any help you can give, and thanks for this website - I am nearly bald after pulling my hair out over this!
