No sound!

I have just purchased a new CPU running Windows XP. I am
getting no sound but have gone through all the
troubleshooting tips. Everything seems to be in
order...Realtek AC97 is the audio device, and there is no
indication that it is not working properly. Does this
mean that my speakers from my previous system are not
compatible? Any ideas please?
 
Just an idea, are the speakers plugged in/connected correctly to the computer
and turned on?
