I have this same problem and tried the suggestions on
http://kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm but none
worked.

My sound card appears to be installed OK and I even d/l a
new driver from Windows Update after this problem
started. When I look at the driver properties it
says "Driver is enabled but has not been started." There
are no conflicts listed in the devices - under the
control panel.

When I click on the volume control I get an error, "there
are no active mixer devices availabler."

I don't want to reinstall Win XP because of the
possibility of losing data, user accounts etc.

Look under START|ALL PROGRAMS|ADMINISTRATIVE|SERVICES and see if Windows
Audio is started. If not, right-click the item, choose PROPERTIES, and
click the arrow the right of the Startup box. Choose "automatic" and
click on OK to exit.

I checked this and Windows Audio was set for automatic and said it was
started. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

BTW - my sound card is a Aureal 8820 - sold as Turtle Beach Montego and came
new with my Dell Pent II 450. It has worked fine with WIN XP. It has the
latest driver according to Windows Update.

I had a new Mad Dog Multimedia Prowler 4.1 sound card (CMI 8738) and tried
to install it to see if that would fix this problem and it has the same
problem. Installed the latest driver from Windows Update but no sound and it
says under device properties "Driver is enabled but has not been started."

No conflicts are shown under system device manager.
