After installing XP, did you install the latest drivers for the hardware
components in your laptop? Right click on My Computer and select Manage from the
menu. In Computer Management, click on Device Manager. Do you see any items
listed with a yellow exclamation point next to them? You need to install drivers
for those items for them to work properly.

You can obtain the correct drivers for your laptop by going to the
manufacturer's web site. Look in the Support section. If you can't find them
post back with the make and model of your laptop.

Good luck

Nepatsfan told you exactly what to do. Go to Dell's website for your
Inspiron 1300 and download ALL the drivers and the Dell laptop software.
Install everything that is applicable to your system.
