hi i have a dell dimension 2350 and the sound does not work anymore.
its not the speakers cause ive tested them out on other computers. the
little speaker that is usually on the bottom right is not there
anymore. can anyone telll me how to fix this. thank you

Two years!
So why all of a sudden do you need sound?

First thing to do is go to the control panel and then the System folder and
then the Hardware and then Device Manager and remove the sound card. Click
OK, getting out of Control panel and then Reboot the computer and see if
that doesn't get you your sound back. If it doesn't then you will want to
see if there may be a newer driver for the sound card. The software may be
either corrupt or you may have installed something during those two years
that either corrupted the sound drivers or is using the memory that the
sound card needs. Go back to the Device Manager and right click on the sound
card and click to Update Driver. Choose to allow the search to go through
the Internet* to download a newer driver than the one that's been installed
on the computer.

* You will need to be connected to the Internet during this process for the
search to take place.

Well......... without knowing your OS I can't, however you can check in your
control panel under Sounds and audio devices (or multimedia in win 98) to se
i f you have any devices installed (software devices). That is your starting
place. Incidently this is the same place to go to place the sound properties
icn in the task bar. just look for a checkbox to "Show volume control on the
taskbar.

you might also look in the Device manager to see if there are any device
conflicts.

i went to the sounds thing in the device manger and i dont know which
one to uninstall... when i click on sounds and video tab theres only 4
things under it and they are
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy video capture
Media control devices
now on my other computer theres like 4 more things under it, like
soundmax.. i hope this helps u help me out..and the reason why i need
sound now is because i got an ipod and i need to be able to hear the
song when i download it

Those are in your device manager....right.....do not uninstall any of them.

Check in the control panel in the Sounds and Audio snap in and see if there
are any devices there, if there are then there is some kind of software
problem.

Report back so I will know where to point you next.

it says there is no device

It does, does it? That is a clear indication of something, unlike
your post, which is a clear indication of nothing at all. EVERY
USENET ARTICLE needs to STAND ON ITS OWN. I.E. include adequate
context. Failure to do so is a sign of either ignorance or
rudeness. If ignorance you can fix it by reading my sig below and
the referenced URLs, or possibly by switching to a real newsreader
and server from the broken Google mechanism.

Because this is not a web forum where the content is only
delivered in pages with multiple replies. Rather, there ARE
people out there who might see only your post, even people
that might have known a solution except with only what you
wrote, there is no problem to solve.

Find what sound system the computer uses, download the most
recent driver for it. You might try the driver you already
have instead but IMO, it's good to have the latest driver.

In Add/Remove programs, search for this driver and remove
it. Install DirectX9C- doesn't matter if that's the version
you already have, just REinstall it then.

Reboot the system and install the audio driver.

Well, from the references headers it appears that this is a
response to my earlier posting. It certainly resolves the
ignorance/rudeness dichotomy.

Don't let them rattle ya.

Run the add hardware wizard click next on the first screen, on the second
screen make sure the radio button that states " I have already installed the
equipment" (or something like that) is checked and click next, on the next
screen that shows installed hardware, scroll to the bottom of the list to
the item that says "Add a new haardware device" and click next, on the next
screen leave the default raadio button checked (search for and install
devices automatically) and click next. If you are lucky the wizard will find
the device. If you are not so lucky then you will have to do some detective
work to find out what equipment you have and install it manually (same
process right up to the last step) and choose it from the list or download
the driver and direct the wizard to the driver file.

Good Luck

i got some a program called driver guide toolkit and i ran that on my
one computer and it has like 7 things under sound and when i did it on
this computer it has like 4 but it doesnt have soundmax or soundblaster
or anything like that listed. do you think that maybe it somehow fell
out from moving the computer around or slighly came out?? thanks for
all you help

Fell out?

Not likely, you most likely have a software problem (driver), or your
hardware has completely stopped working. But even if it did stop working
there should be a notification in the device manager. if you can find out
what kind of sound card is installed then you can download the driver and
reinstall it.
