Have you checked for an updated driver for your soundcard from the
manufacturer's website?

It seems that sound problems are Vista's theme song, they are reported so
often. Come on Microsoft, if you whizz bang new sound doesn't cut it, how
about allowing some backward compatibility?

I have a stock standard, current model Intel motherboard which had great
onboard sound with XP Pro, and it used to drive my 6 speaker system
beautifully - the sound quality was great. My sound is now completely
trashed, and people are sagely telling me I should buy a new sound card ffs.

Stuff that - the "hardware compatibility" program/detector/ whatever it is
told me my hardware was compatible before I upgraded, so either Microsoft or
Intel or both were obviously negligent if something as basic as the sound on
a current model Intel motherboard doesn't even come close to working.

For goodness' sake, how much more mainstream can you be than an Intel M/B? I
bet neither Intel nor Microsoft will buy me a new sound card or give me a
refund. No, didn't think so.

Lots of luck with your Acer Michael.

Your stock standard, current model Intel motherboard which had great

drivers for it come from who?

Andrew, this is not a trick question..

Look in your mobo manual or visit the Intel website to see which
manufacturer is responsible to the sound part, then go to their site to get
Vista drivers..

Some third party manufacturers were slow off the mark, and some still
haven't moved off of the mark at all.. if they didn't get drivers to MS in
time to be included in the Vista RTM, then Vista will not do the job that it
should have.. the driver situation lies squarely with the individual
manufacturers, not MS..

What about the so-called "compatibility" tool? Why didn't that work? Oh I
see, that is Intel's problem too. Right.

The Windows Upgrade Advisor is just that, an Advisor. There is no
guarantee. It can't possibly know about every piece of hardware out there
and if it will or won't work with Vista or how it will work. You need to do
some research to find out what is supported hardware and software wise.
Visit some newsgroups, check on manufacturer's and software author's web
sites for compatibility issues.

This is standard when a new OS comes out. Some legacy hardware is
supported, some will be down the road and some won't. You have to go into
these things with your eyes open - maybe set up a dual boot using a retail
version
of Vista while you work out the compatibility kinks.

Andrew

If Realtek had gotten drivers to MS when they should have, you would not be
here saying this stuff now.. as it stands, you mobo did pass, even if one
function of it was not so darned good.. Intel did their part for what was
actually theirs on the mobo..

I am having the same problem with my new Toshiba laptop (pre-installed with
Vista). It worked for the first few days and then nothing. I have also
tried uninstalling the sound driver and nothing.....yet, my computer says
everything is 'working properly'. HELPPPPP!

Unfortunately my return period has lapsed from Best Buy....

Most OEM websites state, Vista Capable means while their system is
compatible with Vista, not all features may be available and some things may
not be fully functional pending driver availability from hardware
manufacturers.

You state you uninstalled the sound card driver and reinstalled, did you
check for updated drivers both from Toshiba and the soundcard manufacturer's
website.

Yes, I have tried both the Realtek website and the Toshiba. Looks like I
have the latest version.
