No sound

I cannot get any sound. At all. I don't think it is the speakers because
when I turn the speaker power on and off it makes a sound. But if I plug
headphones into the face of my computer tower there is nothing. I've played
with volumes, I can't get anything to happen. I've tried window updates and
it still won't work. I've tried to see if the hardware device is working
properly and it is. I also tried restoring my computer to a previous time
and my computer won't let me. I'm lost as to what to try next. Any ideas?

What set up do you have - on board or sound card, what make, etc.

Umm I think it's a sound card? Not sure. I'm not all that computer savvy.
But my computer is an HP Pavilion Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz, 512mb of Ram,
Windows XP home edition version 2002 service pack 2. Does that help any?
 
I have just recently discovered that the ONLY sound I can get is MIDI files.
Someone sent me a greeting card that had a midi file in it and I was startled
with sound when it started. So I went to my windows media player and opened
up some MIDI files and they will play with sound. But anything else, mp3,
videos, aol sounds, yim sounds, etc, will not play. HELP??
 
Ok so I fixed it! I'm not sure HOW but I did it.
