no sound

i have been to google and asked" how to connect a pc to a hi-fi,all the answers come back the same,cable from line on pc to aux on hi-fi,tried it and got no sound!,with cable in speaker out socket i get sound,so why no sound from line on pc?,do i have to alter something in my soundcard options? thanks!

i know its funny sometimes, maybe one of you could make one of those 'read before posting' threads to explain what information needs to be included in the post
