After installing Win2K Pro on my computer I lost sound completely. Same
result with both a clean install and upgrade. I have sound with win Me but
lose it with 2k pro. I did get the message that "Microsoft Kernel Audio
Splitter" was not found as well as "Microsoft Kernel DRM Descrambler Filter"
toward the end of the installation. Within the device manager, I have a
conflict with "Microsoft Kernel System Renderer" under Sound, video and game
controllers. I also have a conflict with "PCI Device" under Other devices. I
have tried installing win2k sound drivers to no avail. My system is a
Gateway PIII 900Mhz. Anyone have the same problem before? I appreciate your
help.

What it boils down to is installing sound drivers for your hardware that
were written for Windows 2000. Go to Gateway and get the drivers.

I have gone to Gateway and downloaded the win2k sound drivers; same result.
I also tried downloading from the soundcard manufacturer; same result.

It really sounds like a confused install. The "conflicting" PCI device
is preventing it from working. So, maybe deleting the "sound" hardware
and the "PCI" device and then installing will get the mess straightened out.

I removed everything from the "sound etc." in device manager. I removed the
sound card. After installing the soundcard I used the w2k driver installer
that I downloaded from Gateway. Still nothing. It still has a conflict
within device manager. still no sound Icon in the tray next to the clock.

The only conflict after showing "hidden" is the PCI card under "unknown";
which is the sound card. I can't find any drivers anywhere for the Creative
Labs CT5806 for Windows 2000. The only place I found a driver was the
Gateway site. This driver can only be installed through a program though.
After running the program it doesn't change anything. There aren't any .inf
files within the directory of this "sound card driver installer program". I
also tried a different brand card (Mad Dog) and had the same exact problem.

Here is one lead and a reference to what the Creative labs Card is
identified as

CT-5806 is a Creative Labs Audio PCI 64D or 128D Digital Sound Card
(1373 chipset)(another possible driver source)

You may have to go so far as to crawl the registry removing references
to old drivers to clear it up.
