Hi,
I hope someone here can help, 'cause I'm stumped. Recently I started
to download SP2. My system kept running slower and slower until it was
unusable. I finally uninstalled the thing, but it left me with a lot of
problems. I got them all resolved except the sound.

I've been through every troubleshooter my system has, everything
checks out perfectly. Sound appears to play, but doesn't. It actually
acts as though the speakers have been unplugged, but they're not. It's
extremely frustrating.

Any help or advice is most welcome, I really don't know what to do
next.

Thanks,
Robyn

After you uninstalled SP2 and the system is running smoothly, try a
Restore. Start/All Programs/Accesssories/System Tools/System Restore
You can go back up to 90 days.

Hi, thanks for your reply. :-) Unfortunately, that's one of the
things SP2 screwed up. The first thing I tried to do was use restore. It
refused to restore beyond the partial installation. I believe the
message was: "System cannot be restored to that restore point." I even
tried reinstalling XP. That helped with several of the problems, but not
the sound. I've also tried installing a different sound card, with no
change. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks,
Robyn

Try the System File Checker.
Go to Start>Run>type CMD and click OK (this puts you in command prompt)
At the blinking cursor type sfc /scannow (space between c and /)>Enter
This action will activate a scan of your harddrive for missing/corrupt files
and
ask you is you want to replace those files, answer Yes.
Have your WindowsXP CD ready to insert for it will ask for it.
sfc=system file check
scannow=scanning harddrive
If this does not solve your sound problem, you may need to reinstall your
soundcard and its drivers for XP from your CD/drivers disk that came with
your PC
when you purchased it. :~)
