No sound ? Please help.

Hi! I have lost my pc system sounds, i have checked all that can be
checked, all other sounds work ok from CD and DVD even music on files on the
pc work ok but when i go to system information - multimedia - audio codecs
there is none there also when testing system sounds in control pannel -
sounds and audio the play button is grayed out, i have down loaded a codecs
kit but still the same i am lost now and need , can you help please.
