Hi
I have a problem with my sound. I have reinstalled my driver today and i get
the occasional sound from the system and can play a cd via realtec. I cannot
get any sound on the internet. ie sound when new mail arives and audio for
funny videos on the internet etc.
I have checked all the boxes in the options to allow sound.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

One thing to check - Start...Settings...Control Panel....Sounds, Volume tab,
Advanced button - make sure none of the sliders there (except Line-In maybe)
is all the way at the bottom and/or none of the mute buttons at the bottom
are checked.

Done all that already but still no joy.

I take it the option you checked before in IE is Tools...Internet
Options...Advanced tab, Multimedia section, "Play sounds in web pages".
It's possible that setting is not properly written to the registry. Uncheck
it, click Apply, click Okay. Reboot. Go back and check it, click Apply,
click Okay, reboot and see if that helps. The registry key in question is
here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\MULTIMEDIA\SOUNDS

If still no joy, if you could give a web page or two as an example for us to
check - where sound should be playing, but isn't. Cound be a problem with
the media player being used for the videos - like a codec not installed.

Also - what version of Windows and IE are you using?

And, you mentioned you get no sound when new mail arrives. What mail
program are you using? On the Sounds tab in Sounds and Audio Devices in
Control panel, if you scroll down to "New mail notification" in Program
Events - is there a speaker next to the entry to indicate a sound has been
assigned to it. If so, do you hear anything when clicking on the arrow
button next to the "Browse" button?

hi, cheers that seems to of worked. One more question any idea how to get rid
of the crackling on my left speaker? They are new, should I take them back to
exchange them?
Thanks again
Maria

Glad to hear your web sound problem has been resolved. What did you do to
correct it? (For the benefit of others here.)

As for the crackling out of one of your speakers.... First thing I would do
would be to check all the connections between your speakers and the
computer's sound card. Pull out the plug(s), clean them with isopropyl
(rubbing) alcohol and a cotton ball, let dry, repeat, plug back in. You can
also clean the female connectors with a lint-free cotton pipe cleaner. They
may be new, but some grease or other junk may be leftover from
manufacturing. Make sure there's no fraying of any of the cords. Make sure
the cords don't run under or near any power source - such as a transformer
brick, power strip, etc. Swap your speakers left for right, if you can -
depending on their wiring. If it's coming out of the other speaker I would
suspect the wire. If it's coming out of the same speaker, I would suspect
the speaker itself - it could be blown. You could also check your speakers
by plugging them into your home stereo or MP3 player, perhaps. You could
check to see if it's the sound card itself by plugging in headphones or
another set of speakers. If you have powered speakers, make sure they are
plugged into the "line out" connector and not "speaker out" of your sound
card. Make sure you are using the latest drivers for your card - go to the
manufacturer's web site.
