Dear Experts,

Recently I bought a used Dell Dimension 9100.

As intended, I put in new bigger drives and
reinstalled XP Media center with the restore CD.

Installed a few drivers for sound and network.

When the network drivers were working, I did a
Windows update, and updated all the hardware drivers.
This included the sound drivers.

Windows Device Manager shows all the drivers working fine.

But I'm having serious issues with the sound.

If I plug my headphone or speakers into the jack
on the FRONT, I can hear the sound from Youtube.

On the BACK of the machine, there are two sets of
audio jacks. One set is for the sound card, which
also has a firewire.
The other set of colored audio jacks is the set of
jacks that are integrated into the mother board.

If I plug in the speakers anywhere in the BACK, I hear nothing.

When the machine boots, and the sound is turned on,
the Windows XP sound, plays for about a 1/2 second.
Then dies.

So there is sound from the front jacks.
But not from the rear jacks.

Does anyone know the problem, and solution?

What is it?

(Sorry to post to these forums. But Dell's own forums
registration and login systems are completely screwed up!!!
I've just spent over an hour trying to do it, and have
finally given up!!! I'd like to sue them for my wasted time.
First for the 9100 tech problem. And now for their website
which keeps putting me into infinite loops, gives no help,
and no way to reset your password. )

Thanks

Are any of those rear jacks designed to drive a speaker? I'm not so sure
they are. For example, there may be a Line Out jack, but that won't drive
a speaker unless it's a powered one.

Are the headphones plugged in when you connect the speakers in the back?
If yes, you need to unplug them, the speakers are disabled when the
headphones are plugged in. See page 41 for sound t-shooting.

You don't mention what type of speakers you're using, see page 59 for
connections.

Always get any drivers/updates that are related to the PC and it's
components from the PC manufacturers support site, never MS. I suggest
uninstalling the audio drivers and reinstalling ones from Dells support site
per their instructions.

Ok, here's an update.

I gave up the struggle trying to fix it, and started over.

Installed XP SP1 from another restore CD.
And updated the sound drivers.
The sound worked fine out the integrated sound.
But not the sound care.

Then I removed the sound card.
Creative Sound Blaster Augidy 2 z5
Model: SB0350

and installed XP Media edition.
Installed the sound drivers, and the Power DVD.

The sound worked, and media player worked.

So, I'm concluding that this was caused by a bad soundcard.
Shame on the guy who sold this machine to me!

I also notice that this 9100 machine is much louder than my Dell 4700
and 4600.

Overall, I'm really disappointed, and have buyer's remorse with this.

AFAIK you can only have the onboard integrated or the audio adapter
enabled, not both. If you're going to use the integrated audio you should
be able to keep the add-on audio adapter installed but need to disable it in
Device Manager. If you want to use the add-on audio adapter you need to
disable the integrated audio in the BIOS. Some of the newer boards will
automatically disable the integrated audio if an add-on audio adapter is
installed.

Please do not piggy back into a thread, it's considered "hijacking the
thread". It can make it confusing to others searching for specific help and
those who help when seperate problems are mixed in the same thread,
especially when the problem may not be or isn't specific to the same cause.

If you need drivers you can get them here:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...temID=DIM_CEL_3000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid

or if the link wraps/breaks: http://tinyurl.com/3dcrkf

Otherwise please start a new post that has in detail:
The PCs manufacturer and exact make/model
The OS being used
Device manufacturer/make/model (if a device problem)
What the problem is
When the problem started
What you were doing at the time or just prior to the problem
What you have tried already to resolve the problem

I don't know what the hell kind of gibberish that is, but we speak English
here, and you shouldn't hijack someone else's thread. Create your own thread
and speak so we can actually understand what your saying.

*completely wrong*, I use multiple soundcards including onboard all the
time on Dell hardware. No problem.

The OP should take a careful look at the tabs in "Sounds and Audio
Devices" in control panel, and assign appropiate devices for
playback/recording.
