I'm new to camcorders and movie maker. However I manged to film my daughters
show. I don't have a firewire port but transfered from DV camcorder to movie
maker using UBS port. I have learnt alot about effects and titles from the
help screens. When I play the whole version back ready for burning I don't
have any sound that was accomplying the show. Where have I gone wrong? Can
anyone direct me?

You would think using a USB connection would work but unfortunately it
usually doesn't.
If you have invested in a digital camcorder then you really should invest
another 30-40 bucks for a firewire card and cable, it will be worth the
effort and money.

I brought a firewire cable but when i got it home I found I didn't have a
firewire port. How do I get round this? Are you telling me I will not be able
to capture film tand sound o my computer without one.

You can purchase a firewire card with usually 2 ports on it for not much
more $$ than the cable was.

What is a firewire card? Will I need to have this installed/upgraded to my
computer. Is it possible to buy a linking cable that has a usb end and a dv
end?

Are you working on a laptop or a desktop?

If a laptop they generally prove to not be the best tools for video editing
but you can still purchase a laptop expansion card that plugs into the
expansion slot on the side of the laptop. It will have the firewire, IEEE,
iLink port on it.

If a desktop the firewire card is an expansion card that you put in your
computer. It has the firewire (IEEE, iLink) port(s) on it and is rather easy
to install. If you are working on a desktop I really recommend you purchase
this card.

I'm working on a desktop. I've never opened my computer before and a little
worried at putting it in. I'm willing to purchase a card but before I do, How
easy is this job as I don't want to waste my money.

When you open the case you will see slots on the motherboard. A couple
likely already have cards in them but there will be some empty ones as well.
The card simply plugs straight into the slot.
The only words of caution is that make sure you have one hand on the
case/frame of the computer before reaching the other hand in. This is to
avoid causing a static shock that can damage the components inside. Those of
us that build/upgrade our systems regularly have a wrist strap that grounds
us to the computer but for one time putting your hand there is sufficient.
Remove the screw that is holding one of the little cover plates in place
(you will see what I mean) and remove the cover plate. Then install the card
and return the screw to hold the card in place.
Close it up and hook everything back up. When you boot the computer back up
it should automatically recognize the card and install the drivers. If the
card came with a disk use the "Have Disk" option to install the drivers off
the disk. This may sound intimidating but trust me it is actually quite
simple and I used to make $35 an hour to do such easy things. :)

But is it possible to capture both sound and video with a USB cable? I am
having the same problem and would prefer not adding a firewire port if I can
avoid it.

Thanks
Paul

Sure it's possible some people do it all the time but it seems that there
are more people that can't get it to work than there are that can. I know my
JVC MiniDV did the same thing when I tried to use USB and it always captures
flawlessly when I use firewire plus you can't save to DV-AVI when capturing
with USB, sure you can import the video and then save it as a DV-AVI but the
quality loss is already there.

I'm having the same problem to. But I'm using an S-cable. I have a 1394
port is this the Firewall port you are talking about? And I have to purchase
a seperate cable to use this?

Well I took your advice and brought a firewirecable and port. With caution I
opened my tower and was very proud off myself when I installed the card and
restarted the computer to find it worked. I didn't blow up my computer! Thank
you. The purchase was only £40 and worth every penny to capture my DV filming
onto disc. Next step is to advance on my editing. I used windows movie maker
as this is very easy to follow but also very basic. Can you suggest other
software?

Firewire not Firewall and yes the IEEE1394 port is the firewire port. As
long as your camera supports firewire then you really should by the 1394
cable and use that to capture I guarantee you will like the results better.

Awesome! I told you it was easy!
Well for actual video editing there are a ton of programs out there but I
still use Movie Maker. I have plenty of other tools I use to create things
to make my movies better but I always go back to Movie Maker to put it all
together. You just made me decide though that I am going to add a new page
to my website listing all the tools I have as well as other less expensive
(I have spent a TON of money on my toolbox) options and what I use them for.
-Wojo

Exactly and in fact even after you have mastered WMM and begin to add other
tools to your editing package you will still likely return to WMM to put
together your final movie.
-Wojo

I've checked out your site and I now await until you have loaded your new
page. From what you are saying, does this mean I'm not limited to the tools
in moviemaker but can actually use others? Then pull it all together in
moviemaker? I'll continue to experiment with moviemaker and look out on how
to use other tools from your website. Thanks, you have made my little movie
more enjoyable.

Exactly.
For instance I may put together some panning and zooming images in Photo
Story 3 and save them as a WMV file. I may then use Ulead GIF animator to
create an animated GIF and then use Photoshop to create a custom overlay and
then take all those components and put them together in Movie Maker.
-Wojo

Now your sounding too cleaver for me. I'll continue in moviemaker until
mastered it and experiment with others. I finally finished a little film all
in moviemaker and enjoy watching it Now I want to put it on a disc so I can
give it to a friend for her to watch on her DVD player. I need to buy some
disc's but not certain what ones. Once got the disc's how do I burn the
filming?
