I don't know what happened but all of a sudden I no longer get any sound on my computer. I tried reinstalling my sound card , but that didn't help. When I go to Sounds and Audio devices and try to play a system sound by clicking on the arrow, it changes to a square and stays that way until I click on it again. Device manager says that my sound card is working properly. i have a version of WINDOWS ME on the same computer which plays sounds just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a similar problem--but different. When I turn off and reboot, I
get sound, but as soon as the computer goes into "standby" or
"hibernate," either one, the sound disappears and I must reboot again.
It's infuriating, especially when I am expecting an Instant Message. It
is possible (though not very probable) that my HP 750 printer may have
something to do with this, as XP has already told me that XP doesn't
like to "hibernate" with the printer and wants me to get a new
driver--HP says no, however.
Thanks for help.

Reinstall the drivers..most times this is the cause..can be cause by
(conflicts,non-signed drivers, etc.). If nothing happens follow the support
troubleshooting for no sound!

Try checking that start > settings > control panel > administrative tools >
services > make sure windows audio is set to automatic
