ive got a sony dcr-dvd7e, and running XP home.

i can get the files/video clips off the camera with no problems and i can
play then back in WMP no problems (they are saved as mpg).

i can open/preview the clips in movie maker but when i drag them into the
timeline there is no sound and the video is jumpy.

any ideas on why they are jumpy and there is no sound?

Movie Maker does not like .mpg files.

ok, ive converted the files to avi (now they are over 2gb each), when i open
the file in movie maker it just hangs and crashes.
also when i open the new avi files with WMP the video is very jumpy.

i only want to put all the video clips into one movie and resize it to 10mb

VDubMod is like VirtualDub in that if you don't select a compression codec
it'll default to uncompressed and give you the biggest files that are the
hardest to play smoothly, and might not work in Movie Maker.

I use the Panasonic codec (another download... link on my Setup MM2 in XP >
Other Software page) for the compression....and the resize filter to make
the output 720x480 if you're in NTSC areas and the input file isn't that
size.... or else the codec won't work.

Bear in mind avi can contain lots of different file types, as Papajohn has
alluded to.

If you convert to avi, you want to go to DV-AVI, as avi can be mpeg and is
in effect the same file as you already have.

I tend to convert to wmv
