i have windows xp professional and i inserted a cd recently in my cd rom drive to upload a program, it would not read the cd or upload and then i couldn't get the cd rom drive to open. so i tried some things and i think i inaverdently erased my sound device. how, i'm not sure i finally got the cd out but i still do not have sound on anything. is there some way i can reload my sound device? i went to properties and it said there are no active mixer devices or sound device on my system. all the boxes are grey and i can not adjust them in any way. please help as much as you can.
thank you. i also have this posted on the help and support newsgroup but i didn't see much activity there so thought i would try to get a respone her
thank you

Rt click on MyComputer>Select Properties>Hardware>Device Manager. Go to
Sound, Video and Game Controllers and
click on the + sign. Then rt click every entry and wherever you see a
uninstall selection, do it. Restart your computer and
WinXP will reload the audio devices.

thank you Rich. i did as you instructed and i am still getting a error message. only this time it is sayiing: "the driver for this device are not installed (Code 28)" i went to a couple of sites that had been posted and i found the site called driverguide.com but i don't even know where to start to find the driver i would need. also, after i unistalled on the sound, Video and game controllers "it now shows under "other devices"....multimedia and VGA have a big yellow "?" mark in their boxes, i tried to install one driver and got the message "can not install this hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary software. i even tried to reinstall/update the windows XP. still got the same messages. i found some info but as a novice i have no idea what it means....but maybe it will help you help me. went to help and support--my computer--and i have Intel Pentium II, X86 Family 6 model 3, stepping 3, speed 233 mhz. Bios hardware: award software, version: inc#401A0-0105, Windows XP Pro, Version 5.1.2600, Ser Pak 1.0, Hotfix Q819696. and from somewhere ( i forget) i found created 11/08/03: ALS 4000 als4k Avance Audio Miniport Driver(WMD) that is the date i had the XP installed. i don't know if any of this will help you, but i sure hope it does as i have no idea what to do.. i really appreciate you taking the time to help me and i will print whatever instructions you give me and let you know if they work. i have been ill , thats why i haven't gotten back sooner. but i do want to thank any of you that help, it is really appreciated.
