no sound for 3months and 1 week ago all games freeze

a few months ago I was playing a game and my sound just up
and quit. I have uninstalled and reinstalled sound drivers
several times. The speaker test works. I have midi sound
and thats it. All boxes are open (none on mute) when I
check if devices are working it tells me everything is
working...but its not....When I done the directx diag the
midi sound worked but no others. It said failure at 19
something. I reinstalled directx 8 which is what I have
originally. I am running winxp home. Then a week ago I
installed a game that froze my machine up so I uninstalled
it and it is still doing it. I get message subsystem 16
is not working or something. I am not a beginner but I also
am not an intermediate operator. Just old and slow. I don't
have winxp cd anymore either. Can anyone help? Thank you

The first thing I will do to help you is suggest that
the next time you get an error message you might want to
write it down!!! Failure at 19something or something
makes it pretty hard to follow

I have integrated sound realtek av97 as I stated before I

reinstalled
and uninstalled several times.Everything says it is
working. The error
message I receive when I do dxdiag is failure at step
19(user
verification of software):HRESULT=0x00000000(error code) I
don't know if
that even has anything to with it. I do know I have been
told to check
out many many things and all say no problem
