No Sound (Audio) in Timeline Preview

Running Movie Maker 2.1 and Windows XP-SP2. Imported an AVI file created by
VirtualDubMod from a VOB file (what a pain!). The audio in the clips plays
just fine. After manipulating the automatic clips by merging and splitting,
it still plays fine.

But when I move a few clips down to the timeline, there is no audio.

Well, actually, if I move just one clip, it has audio although it displays
flat lined in the audio section of the expanded timeline. But if I move
another clip, neither plays audio.

I'm stumped!

By forcing it to use ffdshow as the only filter -- unchecking all the rest --
I got passed this problem.

Also, this fixed another problem, which was going to be my next question:
Why does saving the timeline always get stuck at 37%?
