Subject: Re: sounds on a computer
-----Original Message-----

If the sounds still work in 'preview' this tells us a few things:
- Your sound card and drivers are probably functioning correctly
- The sound files themselves are in good order
- Media codecs are installed correctly

So the next thing to check is to make sure the 'Theme' or sound scheme is
set up correctly. Make sure the sounds are actually set up to play on this
computer during Windows startup and shutdown. Also, test with a few other
sounds (change your startup sound to something else, and see if there is any
difference.) Hope this helps.

Hi Mike,
We did that. I even changed the sound theme to the default
windows, and still nothing at start up or shutdown.
I had it working and all set up. Then I moved the system
to my friend's house. We set the system up, all was good
and sounds were working. Then a couple days later, she
changed the start up sound and that is when it all went
silent. Funny thing was, we hadn't thought about testing
the recycle bin. We set sounds on other things and still
no difference. Then the other day when i was there, she
emptied the recycle bin and we both noticed the sound. We
were so excited, but then, nothing at shut down. :-(
we have changed sounds, defaulted and still, sound at
preview, but not at the actual function.
It is so Strange!
I have never encountered this before.
Any one else with suggestions? or more from you Mike?
I appreciate your help!
Patricia

Upgraded from Win98 to Win2000 by any chance???

It sounds like you did... but forgot to take out your Win98 sound device drivers first, go into device manager and remove your soundcard devices, reboot... feed the OS the correct drivers for Win2000 when it reboots and finds "new hardware" - that should do the trick - and never take Microsofts advice in upgrading from 98 to 2K, every forum is full of posts like "my soundcard doesn't work now" or "the system speaker beeps instead of playing the sound event l wanted" or such like...

Bet you did an upgrade, yah?
